Ghost in the Shell (1995) [ Kokaku Kidotai ]

The animation is simply wondrous. A near-future Hong Kong and its inhabitants are brought to vibrant life. Effects, particularly the invisibility are fabulous.

Western versus Eastern. Disney, Hanna and Barbera - traditional Western images of animation for so many years. The USA, Britain and France all contributed heavily to a particular type of animation.

Then there was Akira. Some in the West had witnessed the Japanese style of animation, but for most people in the West, Akira was an eye-opener.

Now the computer is being more widely used and the world of animation has exploded in different styles and directions.

BTW, should you actually care, Manga actually means comics. Anime refers to animated movies (and yes, it is the Japanese word).
