This is the Movies section of our site. While
we love all the SF&F series on TV, we cannot ignore all those
great films! Sure, we've seen some of them at the cinema, but
let's face it, you're usually going to watch them later on TV,
even if from video or DVD. We also have latest news on new productions.
If you have any suggestions of films to add,
then just tell Doctor SciFi.
Age restrictions
We have not included age certifications. These
differ widely from country to country and are often not particularly
useful to parents. We are individuals!
Government imposed restrictions are often inappropriate,
particularly with the differing attitudes to violence and nudity
that exist around the world, (why certain people think that it is
quite acceptable for a young child to watch humans being gunned
down but are horrified if a naked female chest appears on the screen
is quite beyond our comprehension).
However, it is not for us to preach, only to help
individuals make a better choice. So, we indicate, in general terms,
levels of straight violence, simple nudity and adult situations.
"Adult situations" meaning things like sexual acts, mental
or physical abuse, etc. If you feel that one of our reviews has
understated one or more of these levels, please let us know as we
wish to present this as accurately as possible.

Please enjoy our Science Fiction & Fantasy
film reviews
We offer short plot summaries, balanced, intelligent
reviews, character/cast lists, quotes, etc. All categorised and
cross-referenced so you can find what you're looking for, (unless
you're looking for the meaning of life). As with the rest of this
site, it doesn't all happen instantly, but is rapidly being built
up. If you are desperately upset that we haven't added your favourite
movie yet, then drop Doctor SciFi a line and he might consider moving
it up his "to do" list.
Now for those of you who read
a review and dare to disagree with it, we have this comment: We
at SFTV.info wonder how anyone can have the temerity to contradict
any of Doctor SciFi's opinions, because he has a brain the size
of a planet and knows everything about everything. However, Doctor
SciFi himself is far more magnanimous and has the following to say,
"It is true that I
am a superior being to you Earthlings and obviously my views are
based on a deep study and knowledge of science fiction and fantasy
both on this planet and others. However, something I like about
humans is their diversity and ability to share opinions, (although
this does sometimes result in wars). I honour mankind and offer
my views as just one voice. You are free to disagree with me and
I will even read your e-mails before sending them to the bin. The
Earth is a better place for having a wide range of views. We don't
all need to agree with each other and I won't hold it against you
- even when you are wrong ..."
Ratings
We have used
our own 1-5 star rating system. We won't specify how the mechanics
of the system work, so there is no point arguing with us about whether
we've got it right or not! According to our system, our rating is
always correct!
BUT WAIT !!!
We decided the star rating on its own was not enough. We had to
have our own Top 100 list, but didn't see any point in just listing
all the 5-star movies, (although this selection is separately available
on its own page). Instead we decided to have a list of the Science
Fiction and Fantasy movies that Doctor SciFi thinks are absolutely
essential viewing. This list may not agree with other people's lists
and some of the movies on it won't even be 5 star movies. It is
a list of those movies where Doctor SciFi says, "You don't
really know science fiction or fantasy if you haven't seen ..."
These movies
are marked "Top 100". (Of course, when we say "100",
we don't necessarily mean "decimal 100", so our list probably
won't appear to you to be precisely 100 movies ...)
What the stars mean:
*****
Stunningly good. Or has broken new ground
for the genre.
****
Very good movie. You should see it sometime.
***
Certainly worth a watch.
**
If there is nothing better on and you have
to watch something ...
*
Really not very good, only for the extremely
bored, or the completist
0 stars
We will rarely give out a 0 mark, but if we
do, it indicates that you will get more pleasure out of doing
your laundry than watching this.
As you
may have read in our Television section, we have decided that actually
defining what constitutes "Science Fiction" or "Fantasy"
is a headache. Some films might even be classified as both. We do
include many films that are not popularly seen as SF even though
they contain strong SF elements. But we have to draw the "Fantasy"
line somewhere as a very generalised definition would cover almost
all movies. Do we include horror movies (mostly no). Do we include
Manga (if we feel like it). Do we include Disney cartoons (occasionally,
yes). Basically our decision is purely arbitrary as we think worrying
about these things is a waste of valuable time that can be more
profitably spent actually watching the stuff.
Instead,
we have come up with something we think is more useful - categorisations
that may allow you to seek out other films that visit the same themes
as your favourites. We tag movies to indicate when they include
such things as androids, invisibility, space travel, magic, kids,
animation, etc. These then link to separate lists of all the movies
with the same tag.
