The 10th Kingdom
takes all the fairy tales and mythology of Europe and weaves it into
Nine Kingdoms where
all those characters we are familiar with from those old tales carry
on their lives (200 years later). Throw in another
factor of
a travelling mirror and we find ourselves in the Tenth Kingdom -
contemporary New York. Well, Prince Wendell does. He is the grandson
of Snow White and prospective leader of the 4th Kindom, but is turned
into a dog by his stepmother - the Evil ex-Queen.
He escapes through the mirror and ends up
with Virginia, a dissatisfied waitress and her father.
The Evil Queen still needs the Prince to complete her evil plot,
so sends minions after him. After a few adventures in New York, a
misfit group returns to the Nine Kingdoms.
Released before Shrek, the miniseries explores the idea of fairy
tale people living out their lives and frustrations and everything
not necessarily being so great after the "Fairy Tale" ending.
The adventures unravel of this Virginia {Kimberley Williams},
her father, the "dog",
the hunter who joins her side - Wolf {Scott Cohen} and all sorts
of wonderful characters they meet (including a Huntsman played
by Rutger Hauer). Her tale ends up being a fairy tale in itself.
Seldom does fantasy television get made this well - Hallmark added
one more good series to their list with this excellent story.
