Andromeda

Captain Dylan Hunt of the Andromeda Ascendant is fighting for the Commonwealth when he gets shot into the edge of a black hole. There he and his ship remain, at the edge of zero time. 300 years later, a salvage operation comes to take the ship. Hunt doesn't give up easily and after a good fight that eliminates the evil guys, his saviours are reluctantly persuaded to become his crew.

His beloved Commonwealth lies in tatters, so it becomes their mission to save the universe and restore the Commonwealth. Not an easy task! In the second series, things get more interesting and there is a bit more fun to be had.

The series was one of those ideas from the head of Gene Roddenberry. Of course, much modernised and trying hard not to be like Star Trek. The leader is on a mission to save the universe, the crew are a disparate group, each with their own agenda and always half threatening to leave. The ship is very advanced and has a super brainy computer with its own personality. Hang on, that sounds just like Blake's 7. When you start comparing characters, the similarities carry on. But of course there is much that is different as well and plenty of stories to entertain, though not much to challenge.
