Dark Angel

According to TV and movies, there are secret military and government projects dotted all over the place, particularly across the USA. Not that any governments know about all of them of course. And so we learn about Project Manticore - an attempt to create super soldiers by taking children from birth, subjecting them to mind control techniques, transgenic enhancements and intensive training. One day, some of the X-5 class escapes.

Life goes bad for everyone when The Pulse happens - an electro magnetic pulse that wipes all the computers and we end up in the old dystopian future. The Dark Angel (Jessica Alba) is Max, one of the X-5s, and lives in Seattle. She runs into Logan Cale (Michael Weatherly) who gathers information through hacking, etc. and broadcasts TV messages, (fighting the bad guys), under the moniker "Eyes Only". They hook up.

When they escaped from Manticore, the X-5s split up. Dark Angel wants to find the others and does run into a number of them. Most of all, she wants to keep out of the hands of Lydecker (John Savage) who still runs Manticore. But he also has to answer to someone (Madame X) and she (Nana Visitor) seems to have her own agenda.

The characters have depth and things are not black and white. Lydecker is a very bad man, but has his own troubles and does have some sense of honour. Cale is a youngish man, but at the beginning, winds up in a wheelchair - and he struggles to overcome this by all means biological, technological and particularly experimental. And Max is troubled by the demons in her mind as well as side effects from her genetic enhancements.

Eventually, the basic conspiracy stuff isn't carrying the series and so we are introduced to a secret ancient organisation with mythic/magic overtones, etc. who are actually remarkably similar to the genetically enhanced persons. This is not a coincidence.

Then they cancel the series because of stupid American ratings systems which don't acknowledge that a million viewers is still worth having, let alone the international audience.
