Three conspiracy reporters on an underground newspaper "The
Lone Gunmen" helped Mulder and later Scully with some of the
X-Files. Three interesting,
intelligent and knowledgeable guys who started to do more than just
track down infomation, they started to get involved. An earlier
X-Files spin-off, Harsh Realm, failed and freed up writer/producer
Frank Spotnitz to create this spin-off (with Chris Carter, John
Shiban and Vince Gillian), which pulled in quite a good number of
viewers, but unfortunately not enough to convince the studio to
keep it going.
The Lone Gunmen consisted of Frohike (Tom Braidwood), Langly (Dean
Haglund) and Byers (Bruce Harwood). They are not the pretty boys
that populate so many TV series, and we praise the gods of science
fiction for some "real people" in the leads! But it doesn't
hurt to have a younger guy on the team and they are soon joined
by Jimmy Bond (Stephen Snedden).
We also meet their rival, Yves Harlow (Zuleikha Robinson), also
intelligent, looking for similar things, and rather attractive.
Who is she really? Well that is part of the mystery.
The Lone Gunmen focuses more on the conspiracies and the technology
and has very little to do with mythical happenings and aliens. With
all the interesting stuff they tackle and the addition of a little
humour, we had hoped the studio would have the intelligence to keep
the series going. Unfortunately not.
After the series was canned, the Lone Gunmen still had a few appearances
to make on the X-Files and there were some none too subtle digs
at Fox. In one of the last X-Files episodes, which in reality could
be said to be the real last episode of The Lone Gunmen, the three
show a strength and nobility rare in mainstream TV. Even a Sith
Lord would have shed a tear at that one.
