When Tron came out in 1982, it beautifully showed the concept of
a world inside the computer that is alive with "people".
It is this concept that was put to good effect many years later
in the animated TV series ReBoot. According to the original creators
Gavin Blair and Ian Pearson, they had been working on the idea since
the early 80's - stemming from their creation of the Dire Straits
'Money for Nothing' video. It took 10 years before things really
started happening, but when they did, it happened big, with ReBoot
being just the first animated production from what is now a large
company.
Mainframe City is a detailed metropolis and it is right inside
your computer! All may be running smoothly until the User does something
(don't you know the feeling!) - particularly when the User wants
to play a game. Bob is a Guardian and it his job to defend aginst
the User Game and Viral attacks. He also wants to find out about
the User - why do they cause such disruption to the City? Surely
it can't just be for fun?
The city is divided into sectors with certain similarities to a
real city, but more carefully organised of course. The sectors are:
Mainframe Kits (where Bob lives); Baudway (business, shopping and
entertainment); Ghetty Prime (industrial); Wall Street (business
- data processing); Beverly Hills (elite residential); Floating
Point Park (recreation).
Bob has friends, has enemies and various others he has to interact
with. For a comprehensive bio of all the characters, the official
site is pretty good. There you can find out all about Mike the TV,
Dot, Enzo, Matrix, Megabyte and all the others.
