Quinn Mallory (Jerry O'Connell) is a physics grad student and is
quite the genius. He has been experimenting at home in the basement
and discovers that he can open up a portal - but where does it go?
He shows it to Professor Arturo (John Rhys-Davies) and his Quinn's
friend Wade Wells (Sabrina Lloyd). Stepping up the power causes
them to be sucked into the portal along with singer Rembrandt Brown
(Cleavant Derricks) who was driving by the house at the time. Lo
an behold, they find themselves on a parallel Earth with a different
history. After an adventure there, they return to ... well they
don't ... they end up on another parallel Earth with yet aother
history.
So begins a long series of jumps around what appears to be an infinite
number of parallel Earths. The length of their stay is dictated
by when the next wormhole can be opened - timed on the device used
to open the portal. Many adventures ensue in which they meet very
similar Earths and very different Earths. they regularly get into
trouble and of course oftne meet alternate versions of themselves.
The alternate histories allows for a huge variety of stories and
ideas that can be explored. What if various wars were won by what
we know of as the losers? What if youth or intellectualism is highly
prized? What if certain discoveries had never been made or the people
have very differnt laws. What if your alternate self is in big trouble
and you turn up? And of course, in all those alternate worlds, somebody
else has discovered how to travel to parallel worlds. The Kromaggs
for instance are mean and unlike our Sliders, they can control where
they go.
Some of the stories are pure fantasy while others ask those interesting
"What if" questions. The main characters change over time
as old ones depart and new ones join, the only constant being Rembrandt
Brown. We get different Quinns (Robert Floyd as Mallory and Charlie
O'Connell as brother Colin). Maggie Beckett (Kari Wuhrer) joins
Season 3 then takes over as female lead from Sabrina. Dr. Diana
Davis (Tembi Locke) joins Season 5. When there are so many worlds
and other scientists messing with dimensional experiments, it is
relatively straightforward to bring new actors into the team. The
big changes happened in Season 3. After 5 seasons there was no more
sliding.
