The following dates are subject to interpretation, but in our opinion
are as accurate as anyone needs to know!
The setting for Star Trek enterprise was reported as "early
in the 22nd century", although it is more like mid 22nd century,
often stated as about 100 years before The Original Star Trek Series.
Now, Kirk was promoted to Captain of the Enterprise in 2263 and
started the (4th) five year mission shortly afterwards. So, subtract
100 years and you get 2163. The first warp drive flight by Zefram
Cochrane and consequent First Contact with the Vulcans took place
in April 2063, ten years after World War III devastated Earth. By
2163, 100 years after First Contact, the Earth has recovered and
is expanding to colonize other planets, (although held back by the
Vulcans from expanding too quickly).
The World Government is formed in 2150. Then there is the war with
the Romulans (who have yet to develop warp drive) - a war fought
using atomic weapons. This war starts in 2156 and ends with the
battle of Cheron in 2160. The Neutral Zone is then established by
treaty. Now, Earth's first transporter technology has previously
been theorized to come out in about 2158. The crucial timepoint
is the creation of the United Federation of Planets in 2161. So,
perhaps 2159, would be a pretty good place to start the series as
it would cover what would be a very exciting time in our "history".
Enterprise has the transporter, but it is clearly new and not the
safest thing.
Now please bear in mind that Star Trek mostly works in terms of
Star Dates, which, despite noble efforts by fans, do not actually
translate literally to our current date system. Furthermore, actual
dates can vary depending on source of information. Our interpretation
is meant only as a general background and should not be taken as
definitive in any way.
The pilot episode involves a Klingon crashing into Earth. Previous
Star Trek timelines have had first contact with the Klingons happening
in 2218. But I guess they forgot about this one, or it was hushed
up or something...
The Vulcans have been helping the Humans, but also limiting them,
(something that Captain Archer is peeved about). Human knowledge
of the further out parts of the galaxy is supplied by the Vulcans.
The Vulcans believe Humans aren't ready for deep space exploration,
but Humans are impatient creatures and so we start the series in
an atmosphere of some tension between Humans and Vulcans. The Vulcan
Sub-Commander T'Pol is assigned to the Enterprise as a supervisor
of the Humans reaching out into space.
